Hidden beneath the building of Shin Kong Bank, Zan Teppanyaki and Shoutou Sushi Japanese Cuisine may seem unassuming and mysterious at first glance. However, once you step inside, you will be awed by its grand and luxurious atmosphere, and what is even more captivating is the masterful skills of the chefs.

The restaurant received the “MICHELIN Guide Selected” in 2020, and Michelin described the dining environment as elegant, as it combines Italian stained glass windows, Chinese classical tables and chairs, and exquisite tableware, showcasing immaculate attention to detail.

In fact, the food served by the restaurant is equally impressive as its decoration and leaves a lasting impression.

Chef Ye Qing Xiong 主厨叶清雄

The executive chef Ye Qing Xiong trained in renowned teppanyaki restaurants in Japan and insists on using organic vegetables, fresh seafood, and wild catches. Highly recommended dishes include American original Angus beef, steamed abalone with kombu salt, and pan-fried Pescadores wild prawns with French sauce. The restaurant also offers various grades of Japanese wagyu, with Hida beef which is outstanding. However, do be informed that advance reservation is required.

The feast we enjoyed that day included: Soups—Lobster Bisque: Rich and flavourful soup prepared by simmering a whole French blue lobster with shell. Truffle Oxtail Consommé: Oxtails, tomatoes, and onions simmered for five days, resulting in a consommé with natural gelatine.

Appetizers—Seared Foie Gras Mousse with Caviar: Fresh foie gras sealed with duck fat, made into a mousse with chicken broth, foie gras, truffle juice, and a hint of sweet white wine, topped with Iranian caviar. Japanese King Crab with Iranian Caviar: Japanese Hokkaido king crabs made into crab meat mousse as the base, topped with Iranian caviar.

Seafood—Kumamoto Oyster with Pear Champagne Sauce: White truffles, pears, emperor beans, and pear champagne sauce. Homeland Lobster with Truffle Pumpkin Sauce: Pumpkin truffle sauce and Japanese mashed potatoes. Steamed Abalone with Kombu Salt and Port Wine Sauce: Slow- cooked in hen broth, 30-year-old Port wine, and truffle juice. Hen broth and champagne.

Salad—Avocado Caesar Salad with Parmesan Cheese. Meat—Japanese Kobe Beef A5 (Grade 12).

Looking at the menu alone, you can already tell how exquisite it is! In fact, teppanyaki is a very interesting way of cooking, as you can see the chef prepare the food in front of you, observe the fresh ingredients, and interact with the chef. That afternoon, we watched the chef perform and listened to him explain the uniqueness of each ingredient, and then personally tasted the delicious dishes he prepared. It was a fulfilling experience!

Next time I visit Taipei, I will definitely go there to eat again!
