My first encounter with Hokkaido feels like a love letter, with each word and sentence warming the heart. From Otaru to Asahikawa, from Sapporo to Furano, these enchanting cities turn Hokkaido into our land of romance.

10 Love Letters to Hokkaido (7)
-Biei and Furano

Dear H,

My inaugural self-driving adventure in Japan brought me to the tranquil outskirts of Hokkaido, where the land stretches far and the population is sparse. Journeying through the picturesque landscapes of Biei and Furano, the undulating hills of these two towns create a rich and ever-changing natural landscape.

Gazing from the car, I marvelled at the lone poplar tree standing amidst golden rice fields, the red-roofed cottages nestled at the foot of the hills, the neatly aligned birch trees along the roadside, and the train leisurely meandering alongside the riverbank. Each of these scenes is as beautiful as a postcard.

Arriving at Shikisai no Oka in Biei, a vast land covering approximately 15 hectares, one is greeted by a profusion of colours in the expansive flower fields. Dozens of varieties of flowers and plants compete for attention, creating a dreamy and magnificent panorama that seems to extend infinitely towards the horizon. And there you see a group of Japanese girls, their straw hats lightly resting on their heads, skirts billowing in the gentle breeze, standing and smiling brightly amidst the sea of flowers.
