Pumphouse Point is a unique adults-only wilderness retreat located inside Tasmania’s iconic Cradle Mountain Lake St Clair National Park. Poised mysteriously over a glacial lake amidst centuries-old forests and highland mountains, Pumphouse Point is the jewel in the crown of wilderness experiences in Australia’s island state.
It’s a tourism feat like no other, taking over a decade of determination from local legend Simon Currant. 19 boutique rooms and suites have been thoughtfully created within a magnificent industrial 1930’s pumphouse, originally built to pump water as part of Tasmania’s renewable hydro-electricity scheme.
All rooms in this hotel offer a snapshot of the building’s heritage with exposed copper piping, weather-beaten cast-iron window frames and dramatic industrial styling. The experience sees guests immerse themselves in a two or three-night stay in the wilderness, with roaring wood fires, spacious communal lounges and ‘honesty’ bars.
In addition, Guests won’t see room service, art on the walls or access to netflix. In fact, there’s no Wi-Fi at all, but stepping out of your comfort zone is all part of the experience.
Stays are inclusive of hearty breakfasts, larder lunches and shared-table dinners showcasing local small-scale producers. On Saturday nights, the firepits are ignited and mulled wine flows as dinner is flame-grilled on giant asado grills outside. Freshly-baked sourdough is delivered on-demand for guests to accompany an indulgent range of cheeses, dips and charcuterie provided in each room, all complimentary.
Guests are encouraged to explore the surrounding wilderness through complimentary use of e-bikes, romantic rowboats or the vast network of hiking trails in the area. The knowledgeable staff guide guests to hidden lakes and perfect picnic spots.
Lazing by the fire with a platter of larder produce, a good book or a board game puts guests in equally good stead to watch the wombats, wallabies and platypus passing by just outside. To ease the pressures of daily life, highland massages are also offered by skilled therapists to help guests unwind during their stay.
A unique mix of authenticity, connection and experience, Pumphouse Point needs to be seen to be believed.
