The Macallan lifts the curtain on Mastery Beyond Reason, a new documentary film capturing the pursuit of excellence that defines its single malt Scotch whiskies.
Spotlighting the people behind the craft – multi-generational partners who are now part of The Macallan family – the film offers a rare journey into the judgement, patience, mastery and meticulous care that shape The Macallan’s sherry seasoned oak casks, which define 100% of the whisky’s natural colour and around 80% of its flavour.
Guiding viewers through this world is renowned photographer Steve McCurry, a long-standing collaborator with The Macallan having captured the entire cask journey. From The Macallan’s sawmills in Ohio and Northern Spain to its cooperages, vineyards and bodegas of Jerez de la Frontera and onward to The Macallan Estate in Speyside, Steve’s lens reveals the mastery, dedication and generational craft behind each step.
Today, The Macallan owns and oversees each step in the sherry cask journey, securing the craftsmanship and character that will shape its whiskies for the future. It’s a commitment that sets a new standard for transparency and traceability.
This ownership safeguards the expertise and skill behind each component of the whisky-making process: sawmills, cooperages, vineyards, and bodegas – preserving centuries of expertise while enabling the highest standards. It is a transatlantic journey that is unique to The Macallan.
A 30-minute cinematic documentary directed by Denis Delestrac and narrated by McCurry, viewers hear from expert makers at the sawmills of Coopers Oak in Ohio and Tevasa Forestal Group in Northern Spain, as well as the masters behind the bodegas and vineyards of Valdespino, and Kirsteen Campbell, The Macallan’s Master Whisky Maker.
Reflecting on the filming of Mastery Beyond Reason, McCurry said: “To me, this entire process is about vision – of craft, of passion, of mastery. It’s the feeling of making the right step at the right time. A pursuit of quality and legacy, captured in a moment... an image that endures.”
Throughout the documentary, viewers also hear from Jane Graham, Managing Director, Cask Operations, whose work has been instrumental in The Macallan’s sherry cask ownership journey. Describing the craftsmanship spotlighted in the film, Graham said: “Exceptional oak casks have been at the heart of The Macallan since 1824. Today our ownership allows us to be involved in each stage of the cask creation process, learning from masters and preserving the skills and knowledge required to make the very best casks for generations to come – ensuring the integrity of The Macallan and protecting our Signature Taste now and into the future.”
Finally, drawing inspiration from each of the six key stages in The Macallan’s whisky making process, Josep Roca, sommelier and co-owner of the two-time “World’s Best Restaurant” El Celler de Can Roca, has created six unique serves – each one a sensory interpretation of the mastery behind that stage. These creations appear throughout the documentary, weaving flavour and craftsmanship into the narrative.
