Tokyo rarely makes space for tradition and luxury to coexist so naturally. At Takanawa Hanakohro, the rituals of a Japanese ryokan are not preserved as nostalgia but refined for modern living. Set within the heart of the city, this intimate retreat offers a quieter, more considered expression of luxury – one that values space, privacy and attentiveness. It is a place where omotenashi is practiced with intention, and where tradition feels elevated.
Set within the expansive Prince Takanawa complex, Takanawa Hanakohro is remarkably central and well-connected yet feels deliberately removed once you step inside. The transition is subtle but unmistakable: shoes come off, voices soften, and movement slows. What unfolds is not an escape from the city, but a carefully designed pause within it.

The Room
I stayed in the Premier Japanese Garden Suite, a spacious retreat overlooking the surrounding gardens that immediately sets a calmer rhythm. Tatami floors, low seating and natural textures define the space, but the experience feels contemporary – thoughtfully proportioned, well-lit, and designed for comfort as much as atmosphere.

One of the most memorable moments of my stay was breakfast delivered directly to my suite. Beautifully arranged and served without disruption, it allowed the day to begin at an unhurried pace. What stood out even more was how seamlessly my dietary preferences were accommodated, without explanation or adjustment feeling like a request. It is in moments like this that omotenashi reveals itself.
Facilities & Surroundings
What truly distinguishes Takanawa Hanakohro is its relationship with the wider Prince Takanawa ecosystem. Within minutes, you can move from the stillness of the ryokan to full modern hotel facilities - including a gym, spa, sauna, jacuzzi, and communal baths - as well as enjoy complimentary access to multiple executive lounges across the neighbouring Prince hotels. Each lounge offers a distinct ambiance, enabling guests to transition seamlessly between settings throughout the day without departing from the hotel premises.
Beyond the built spaces, the property is surrounded by a 20,000-square-metre Japanese garden, home to seasonal cherry blossoms, koi ponds, and historic structures. Wandering its pathways adds a sense of calm and continuity that feels increasingly rare in the city.

Dining & Cultural Experiences
Dining at Takanawa Hanakohro is intentionally understated, designed to fit into your rhythm rather than dictate it. In-room breakfast is a highlight, but guests can also explore a wide range of dining options across the complex - from casual lounges to more formal restaurants.
Equally meaningful are the traditional cultural experiences offered at the ryokan’s OH-SAI Lounge, including matcha grinding, sake tasting, and other seasonal activities guided by the team. Guests may join activities or relax in their suite, allowing everyone to choose their own pace.
What Sets Takanawa Hanakohro Apart
Few ryokan experiences in Japan, especially in Tokyo, are embedded within a large, fully integrated hotel complex. At Takanawa Hanakohro, guests experience traditional ryokan hospitality while having direct access to the broader Prince Takanawa facilities, including wellness, lounges and multiple dining options.

This structure allows for an uncommon level of flexibility. Guests can move easily between the privacy of a ryokan setting and the convenience of modern hotel infrastructure without leaving the grounds. It is a model that prioritises choice, making Takanawa Hanakohro distinct from both standalone ryokan and conventional city hotels.
Takanawa Hanakohro is best suited to travellers who value intention over excess. It offers the experience of omotenashi as everyday comfort – through space, service and the freedom to set one’s own pace. For those who want to experience Japanese tradition without leaving the the city, this stay provides a rare sense of balance. In a destination defined by speed and choice, Takanawa Hanakohro stands out for its clarity of purpose rather than its scale.
